Similar films to the gift- my main inspiration

Similar Films

When I originally wrote the gift I based the story on the Ring. I had watched both the Japanses version and the American version. Before this I had watched the parody, Scary movie 3. The gift is loosely based on these films, but with a twist.

The Ringu

'A mysterious video kills whoever views it, unless that viewer can solve its mystery.'
It was produced in 1998, and was rated UR.

The Storyline:
Reiko Asakawa is researching into a 'Cursed Video' interviewing teenagers about it. When her niece Tomoko dies of 'sudden heart failure' with an unnaturally horrified expression on her face, Reiko investigates. She finds out that some of Tomoko's friends, who had been on a holiday with Tomoko the week before, had died on exactly the same night at the exact same time in the exact same way. Reiko goes to the cabin where the teens had stayed and finds an 'unlabeled' video tape. Reiko watched the tape to discover to her horror it is in fact the 'cursed videotape'. Ex-Husband Ryuji helps Reiko solve the mystery, Reiko makes him a copy for further investigation. Things become more tense when their son Yoichi watches the tape saying Tomoko had told him to. Their discovery takes them to a volcanic island where they discover that the video has a connection to a psychic who died 30 years ago, and her child Sadako...

The film is classed as a horror, mystery and thriller. On IMDB it has a rating of 7.3 which is good, especially considering it from Japan, and few movies from Japan attract an audience outside Japan because they have different conventions.

The Ring

'A young journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it.'
It was produced in 2002, and has a rating of 15.

The storyline
Rachel Keller is a journalist investigating a videotape that may have killed four teenagers (including her niece). There is an urban legend about this tape: the viewer will die seven days after watching it. If the legend is correct, Rachel will have to run against time to save her son's and her own life.

This film is classed as a horror, mystery and thriller like the original Ringu. On IMDB it has a rating of 7.1, which is lower than the original, which is surprising as it should appeal to an American audience more than Ringu.

Scary Movie 3

'In the third installment of the Scary Movie franchise, Cindy has to investigate mysterious crop circles and video tapes, and help the President in preventing an alien invasion.'
It was produced in 2003, and has a rating of PG-13.

The storyline
A mysterious killer video tape is circulating around. One look at this tape and you have seven days left to live. News Reporter Cindy Campbell (Faris) witnesses this video tape and tries to work out a way to prevent her death. But this is not the only mystery to appear. Crop circles have been appearing in the local farm of Tom (Sheen) and George (Rex). With help from Aunt Shaneequa (Latifah), Cindy suspects that the aliens may be linked with the killer tape and must now work out both mysteries before it's the end of the world.

The film is classed as a comedy, and has a rating of 5.3 on IMDB.
