Possible Distributor Research-Independent Distributors

StudioCanalUK

StudioCanalUK is a subsidiary of StudioCanal, a French distributor company which owns the third largest film library in the world. StudioCanalUK, which was formely called Optimum Releasing, was founded in 1999 and is headquarted in London and operates in both the UK and Ireland. The company releases many films, including foreign language films, anime releases such as Studio Ghibli's films and independent British, Irish and American films in both the UK and Ireland.

When the company operated under the name Optimum Releasing, it had an image of a modern, independent new release and back catalogue distributor. Optimum released over two-hundred films a year and one was one of the most prominent distributors in the UK independent film and world cinema market.

Since having its name changed to StudioCanalUK, the company has released films such as Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, Tyrannosaur, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, The Awakening and W.E.
This company may be a suitable distributor for our film, as it releases films that are from a wide variety of film genres, including two horror films Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and The Awakening, and is one of the UK's most well-known film distributors. Also, seen as our film is independent and regional and this company is an independent distributor which releases regional films, this also makes it a suitable distributor, as it will help our film reach its northern audience.

Lions Gate Entertainment

Lions Gate Entertainment is a North American entertainment company which was founded in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1997 as Lions Gate Films. As of 2012, it is now the most comercially successful independent film and television company in North America and the sixth most profitable movie studio.

The company serves North America, the UK, France and Australasia and owns several subsidiaries including Summit Entertainment, Roadside Attractions and Epix, which is co-owned with Paramount. As well as making films, releasing films on DVD and making TV shows, Lions Gate Entertainment also makes music and publishes music. Lions Gate Films, the companies film division, has distributed many notable films including:
  • Farenheit 9/11
  • American Psycho- this film and Farenheit 9/11 were too controversial for the mainstream companies to release.
  • Dogma
  • Saw
  • Total Recall
  • Reservoir Dogs
  • Young Guns
  • Its A Wonderful Life
  • Dirty Dancing
  • The Hunnger Games-this is now the studios highest grossing film to date.
Lions Gate very rarely co-produces with the major studios, but has teamed up with Mirimax Films to release the sequel to Dirty Dancing, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Paramount Pictures for the 2002 film Narc and 2004's The Prince and Me. The company was also a silent partner with 20th Century Fox in the 2004 Sc-Fi film The Day After Tomorrow.
Lions Gate may be a good distributor for our film, The Gift, as the studio is a successful independent company and many people do not expect independent companies to be successful, so may make our film look appealing to a mainstream audience as well as an independent one. Also, the company releases a wide variety of genres, ranging from fantasy (The Hunger Games and Dogma) to Sci-fi (Total Recall) to horror (Saw).
